HEY GUYS NEW TUMBLR ACCOUNT.
I’ve settled on my new years resolution to focus more on myself and art and all that. I’ll be keeping this account, but I’m switching it to not be my main.
New Account: http://silentlucidityart.tumblr.com/
The old art blog has the -old attached to it now, and yes I’ll be reblogging from this and my old art blog to catch up, proper tag, yadda yadda. :) I’ll only be on this account on my days off. <33
Anonymous asked: After looking at your dA gallery, I fully understand why you got so irrationally asspained at SociallyUnacceptableArt - Because your work was probably posted there, and you can't handle criticism.
I don’t know why I’m going to bother responding to someone who’s white-knighting for SUA on anon, but hey, let’s try, and pray to god you find this sometime. (Though you probably won’t! Sad.)
Sure, I got kind of mad! However, you’re wrong as to why I’m mad! My work has never been posted to SUA; if you bothered to do your homework before tossing accusations, you’d know that (though watch it be posted now in some kind of hateboner the followers probably have for me, lol). However, if it were, I’d be fine with that! SUA is a blog for things people find ‘weird’ no matter how subjective that term is. I’ve had my art posted to things like SUA before and have been totally fine with it - I’ve even asked them to source it. (All publicity, even bad, is good publicity.)
They never did, but hey, I did ask.
Before I move on to why I’m still pretty angry at SUA and the like, however, you’re wrong on another thing - criticism. What SUA does is… not critique, and if you think so, you’re pretty irrationally wrong. Critique is pointing out flaws in an artist’s work in order to help them improve; what SUA does is not critique, and it never has been, in any regard. (Criticism: the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes.) SUA doesn’t point out mistakes or faults - it just says something is bad and moves on, so it’s not criticism! That’s just not correct, and as much as you used ‘irrationally asspained’ to make ‘butthurt’ look academic, I’d kind of expect you to know the difference. (Expecting something out of a white-knight is classic; out of an anon is just silly on my part.)
Speaking of being ‘irrationally asspained’, though, let’s actually talk about why blogs like SUA can be pretty awful.
I myself? I think it’s a novel idea, and I don’t mind being featured in them. I never have. My art is weird - fuck, I’m weird. I belong in a place like that for people to laugh and go 'gee, at least I'm not that messed up'. However, I wasn’t always like this.
When I first started posting art, I was scared. When that turned into the weird stuff, that fear only intensified. I knew it was weird, and I knew people would make fun of me, and if it hadn’t been for all of the positive reinforcement I was getting at the time, that fear would have stopped me from doing what I love. I was a kid - I believe thirteen at the time - and while I dealt with my fair share of flamers, I had never been put on a pedestal and made fun of.
Though, I began to see other people that were. Moreso? I began to see people who refused to post their art because of places like SUA. They were literally so afraid of sharing their artwork that they simply stopped altogether. While sure - you can write it off to ‘oh baw, they need a thicker skin’ and have it be true, they wouldn’t need that thicker skin if it wasn’t for places that made fun of the less talented / more eccentric / weirder fucking weirdos. I understand being able to take ‘criticism’ as you so crudely put it (read: flaming) but it’s not criticism. It’s calling them, as an artist, a waste of talent for not putting their skills (or lack-thereof) to better use. They wouldn’t post anything at all because they were — and some still ARE — afraid of places like SociallyUnacceptableArt. As I said, I’ve talked personally to people who are afraid of drawing in general because of this kind of thing.
So yes - I am quite ‘irrationally asspained’ at the fact that, no matter the intention, that SUA literally exists to point and laugh at people. (Their FAQ can say whatever the shit they want - they’re not effected by this flaming, so no shit they think their intents matter. See: Privilege?)
Not everyone can put up with shit like that the way I can. Not everyone has been through the wringer like I have and can laugh at themselves, and forcing them into that when they’re not ready is wrong. Not every artist who draws fetish smut (or art in general, to be frank) is confident - in fact? A lot of them aren’t! They take to the internet to find people like them who enjoy what they enjoy, and while sometimes they find that, most of the time they find people who hate them and their artwork.
My issue with SUA is it literally scares people from sharing their artwork. They pretend it’s all in good fun because they claim it’s ‘not a point and laugh’, but it is. They’ve never been on that side of the fence - so they don’t know half of the shit we (used collectively) go through without their help. Flamers will find us even if we untag our work, hide it from fandoms, ect - showcasing ‘our’ art only makes that easier for them to do.
Also, if an SUA person sees this and would like to submit my crappy art to the blog, go for it. Just make sure you source it; I’ll be more than happy to deal with what comes, the good and the bad.
Reblogged to my fetish tumblr because of being super fucking relevant.
